On October 8th 2005 a devastating earthquake hit northern Pakistan the epicenter originating in the north of the country in Kashmir. 80,000 people were killed and over 1.5 million made homeless. A year later the FCO film unit were asked by the British High Commission to make a half hour doc. for broadcast on PK1 (Pakistan's state run TV channel) that would bring things up to date regarding the relief effort and in particular the huge contribution made by British charities and relief agencies.
'One Year On' describes a journey that begins at the site of a destroyed tower block in Islamabad and follows the winding mountainous road into the foothills of the Himalayas. Here in Pakistan occupied Kashmir where tens of thousands of people had died within minutes survivors struggled to rebuild their homes and their livelihoods. 'One Year On' interviewed, local people, UK based charity workers and representatives from DFID, BHCom and the Pakistan army.
Knifedge produced an extraordinary piece of work that was at once engaging, passionate and of the highest integrity. Tom Hadley's direction was both sensitive and sincere.
